NYFW FEB 2020

This season FW 2020, I was absolutely blown away and mesmerized by the amount of art, beauty, grace, stature, elegance, poise, and innovation by fashion designers this year. I couldn’t keep this to myself. I needed to share my absolute favorites. These pieces have me excited for FW 2020/2021 and this winter isn’t even close to over! If you have no idea why people go absolutely insane over fashion in the months of September and February, you can read all about their significance here as well as acronyms that I will be using throughout this post. For those of you who love fashion, let’s dive in, shall we?

Veronica Beard was honestly a brand that I typically tend to skip over however, this collection definitely put them on my radar. I was rapt by the styling in this collection as there were ensembles created that I never thought of. Leather pants were paired with a blazer an a wool coat. When I think of different articles of clothing for corduroy, I think of a corduroy skirt, a corduroy jacket, and even corduroy pants, all as separates. In this collection, I like how it is a set, layered with a slightly oversized bold plaid coat. Speaking of layering, we all love the skirt and sweater style but I never thought to add an oversized blazer or military jacket to top off that look. Good job Veronica Beard!

Ulla Johnson is a designer whose clothing I was introduced to by my friend Jamie and it is not hard to see why. There was an intricately woven crochet dress that was combined with an oversized leather belt to go along with the future fall leather trend. Amongst Ulla’s collection were statement pieces from dramatic ruffled dresses to puffed balloon sleeves reinvented from the renaissance to fit the modern age. Ulla has now been added to a list of designers I would love to see more of.

When I got my first “adult” car, it was a black on black Nissan Rogue and I sprinkled the interior with glitter. Purple glitter to be specific. No one was allowed to eat in that car, I kept it spotless (besides the glitter) and was very proud driving that car all over Colorado. It was nick-named the V-Ness Express, Nessquick, and the Ness-mobile. I considered it my spaceship and I loved that car! It had my personality all over it! Well the Rodarte collection gave me the gift of nostalgia with the black shimmery crop top and pants set, and the black with shimmer. Not to mention a real orchid boa with purple orchids. There were so many more stunning pieces within this collection, but we will highlight these for now.

This label is close to my heart as I discovered them during Fashion week Feb 2019. I was amazed at their collection then, and I am blown away by their collection now. Meet Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong, the designers behind Greta Constantine. I mean, need I say more? I did a full post on their collection because this collection is the definition of falling in love! Here are 3 looks that serve as an intriguing intro to their full collection.

After going through the Sally LaPointe collection, I’d like for her to color coordinate each room of my future home. Please and thank you. The color of each look, the styling, the fabric give it all to me. September 2019, I was able to see her collection for SS20 and noticed she really has a grasp on color and aesthetics. Her shows are different as last season she had an orange runway and this season it was black. You can tell she puts a lot of emphasis on detail and presenting. One thing I look for within a collection, is if the fabric is moveable because it adds grace and elegance. The fabrics Sally LaPointe chose are extremely fluid so if you were to wear the clothing it would flow well with your body. I also appreciate the bold colors of blues, purples, and almost neon yellow that she used in her fall collection as it is typical to stick with a deep warmer tones for fall.

J. Mendel. This collection had me saying, “oh wow, oh wow, oh wow” and OH WOW it is. The first dress on the left is a dress embroidered with golden flowers. Zoom in on the purple OTS dress (second row, very right), and you will notice it is sewn with ruffles and has oyster pearl looking patches. This dress is one that I would love to wear on a red carpet one day. Shoot I’d wear it just for fun. My heart fluttered when seeing this dress because I was enthralled by its beauty. The remainder of his dresses, have been keeping on with the black and crystal, shimmer theme that I am loving. The fit, the style, the thoughtfulness, the creativity. I am in awe. Well done J. Mendel.

Zimmermann. If you don’t know Zimmermann, well get to know this brand because it seems as though every affordable fashion brand tries to imitate their dresses and designs. I am calling it again in Fall 2020. The Aussie sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann are masterminds when it comes to fashion. Their brand started in 1991 and within the last several years they have blown up. It’s not hard to see why. They understand texture, volume, silhouettes, and how to combine these factors to make a woman look and feel remarkable. If you are not familiar with Zimmermann, there was a Zimmermann dress that Beyoncé wore the “A Wrinkle In Time” Premiere in 2018 that of course, went viral (it’s Beyoncé duh). This really put Zimmermann on the “out of industry” map. Ever since then, they have virtually dominated the fashion world (in my opinion). Zimmermann is definitely a place to go to if you’re seeking an investment statement piece. This season, their collection contained a purple dress with ruffles paired with a belt and western fedora, star tights underneath to add a whimsical essence. They combined purple velvet with a lace material to create a work of art within a dress. That same dress elevates to another dimension with the pearled buttons down the front. If you’re not drooling, I don’t know what to tell you.

Last September, I somehow stumbled upon an a party that designer, Christian Siriano was hosting. I have no idea how I got an invite or how I even got in there. The Real Housewives of NY were there and some other celebrities (whom I forgot their names). Then, Karlie Kloss made an appearance and was as graceful and beautiful as ever. I of course, was so mesmerized and in shock that I hid in a corner. I need to work on not being star struck. “Vanessa, they are people just like you.” Anyway, this season, if you haven’t already seen it, Coco Rocha ended Christian’s show with an elaborate dance/model/strut as Leslie Jones (from Saturday Night Live) who was sitting front row hilariously commentated the entire thing! It was eventually turned into a meme by meme guru Saint Hoax. I think comedians should sit front row and commentate every fashion show from now on. Agreed? Back to the clothing. Christian created pieces that turned models into walking sculptures. Here were the 6 that stood out to me the most. Coco Rocha’s iconic look in the top center of this mini gallery.

Alice + Olivia. I have loved this brand since I was in college. I discovered a gorgeous dress in one of their beautiful window displays and was a fan ever since. A+O always BRINGS it. You can count on Alice + Olivia to have bold prints and patterns. Although I have never been to an A+O show, (on my dream list) I also appreciate that they normally do presentations to debut their collections. It gives spectators a more interactive experience because you’re able to go up close to see the fabrics. As a textures person, it makes a collection more memorable and can be helpful for buyers who are sourcing for their stores to have a better sense of the fabrics on the clothing that would do well in their shops. Here we see that with the additional layer of leather as well. If there is anything you have learned from this blog it is that leather will be in this fall. Not your normal black leather but in many colors and patterns. A+O has snakeskin print leather pants! This brand is one of those that makes you think, “now why didn’t I think of that.” So simple, yet it is such a statement! They created a ruffled dress where the ruffles are lace.

If you have actually read all of this congratulations! You have reached the end. Well, almost. Below is a final gallery of the remainder of the designers that stood out to me. For FW 2020 the trends are colorful leather (and leather mixed with other textures), ruffles, lace, statement puff sleeves, bold colors, and sequins on black with large florals. Tell me your thoughts on this roundup. Did any designer stick out to you? Let me know if you’re excited for the upcoming trends and if there are any in particular that you want to try next season. Thank you for reading and now it’s off to see what London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks bring!
